What is CJSF?
California Junior Scholastic Federation is a statewide honor society that recognizes outstanding students. Students are appreciated for their high grades in academic subjects and outstanding citizenship. The 6th Grade Honor Society is a way to allow 6th graders with outstanding academic achievement and citizenship to participate in the organization.
Who can join?
Any student with high grades in academic subjects should apply. Eligibility requirements are explained on the application. Primarily “A” and “B” grades count toward CJSF points. Honors classes receive extra points. Final grades of “D” or “F” and/or marks of "N" or “U” in citizenship in any class disqualify the student from that semester (progress report grades do not count).
Is membership automatic?
No, a student must apply each semester he or she qualifies.
What constitutes "Proof of Grades"?
Proof of Grades can be copies or originals of report cards, grade printouts from Q, or copies or originals of transcripts. Please note that the main office will not print out grades/transcripts for students; this must be done at home.
What is the service requirement?
- School based community service is our preference. Students must perform a minimum of 5 hours of school based community service. This must be volunteer work; a grade or money cannot be received for this service.
- Outside community service must be approved in advance. Please see Mrs. White in B-2 for preauthorization of outside service. For verification of pre-approved off campus service you must attach a letter stating the following: the date service was provided, description of service, hours completed, name and signature of the contact person.
- For extenuating circumstances regarding inability to complete service hours, please see Mrs. White.
What are the membership dues?
Starting with the first semester of the 2017-2018 school year students are asked to pay $5 membership dues. This money is used for charitable works and other CJSF activities. Please do not attach cash to applications; please pay at the student window and attach the receipt to your application (along with proof of grades and proof of service hours.
For extenuating circumstances regarding inability to pay membership dues, please see Mrs. White.

Do members receive anything?
Honor Members receive a special certificate and a gold pin. Additionally, Honor Members have preferential seating at the promotion ceremony and are recognized for their status.
What are the requirements to be an Honor Member?
To be an Honor Member a student must be a member for a minimum of 3 out of the 4 semesters of 7th and 8th grade.
What is the benefit of being in CJSF?
In addition to the cards, certificates, and pins, CJSF members have the pride and recognition for being a part of this prestigious organization. They are also familiar with the organization so that they can join CSF in high school.
Does being a member of CJSF automatically qualify a student for CSF?
No, membership in CJSF does not automatically qualify a student for membership in CSF in high school. After each semester at the high school, students must apply and qualify based on the CSF requirements. At the high schools there are also special awards at graduation for CSF members.
Where can I buy CJSF shirts, sweatshirts, promotion announcements, etc.?
At this time Monte Vista does not sell CJSF merchandise. You can purchase CJSF items directly from the organization.
Please note that some items, such as awards, are not available for purchase

Why are 6th graders in a group called "Honor Society" instead of CJSF?
Currently CJSF does not recognize 6th graders as being eligible for CJSF membership. To be inclusive of all students at Monte Vista, the Honor Society was created to allow 6th graders to participate in CJSF events and such. If CJSF is the California Junior Scholastic Federation, think of 6th Grade Honor Society as the junior CJSF.
